What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

You will not hear us drilling unless there is genuinely no other way in. Picking, decoding and bypass tools open most residential locks without a mark, and when a lock does have to be drilled we replace it and explain exactly why.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou stepped out to grab the recycling bin and the door swung shut behind you.

The fix

Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.

The fix

Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open.

The fix

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairYou came home to find the front door standing open.

The fix

A break-in repair happens alongside a police file and an insurance claim, and a good locksmith keeps both in mind. Before any hardware is moved the damage is photographed as found: door face, edge, strike, jamb, hinges and glass.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is.

The fix

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou let a part-time employee go on Friday.

The fix

Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours.

How we approach the work

Key control is the quiet half of security for a business. A patented keyway means blanks are not sold openly, every key is numbered, and a copy needs a signature from someone you named. We register the system, keep the schedule of which key opens which door, and repin a cylinder when a key does not come back, so a staff change never becomes a mystery.

Armitage

  • Your right to be there, confirmed. For lockouts and key cutting we check identification or another proof. It is a courtesy to you and to whoever else holds a key.

  • Options for now and later. Sometimes the sensible move is a small fix now and a planned upgrade later. We tell you which parts are urgent and which can wait.

  • A clean door and clear notes. We leave the area tidy and give you a short written account of what was done and how many keys were cut.

Homeowners come to us with small questions that turn out to matter: why does the door rattle, why does the key stick, should the patio door have more than that little latch? The residential pages answer them one at a time.

Anti-snap cylinders, hardened shrouds, sidebar mechanisms and ball-bearing drill protection are the vocabulary of high security hardware. We translate that into what it means for your door and stop at the level that fits the risk.

Office managers, franchise owners, property managers and shopkeepers all come through the commercial pages. The work is the same trade as residential locksmithing, but the hardware is heavier, the keying is planned and the paperwork matters more.

Fobs fail for boring reasons and interesting ones. A flat battery is boring and easily fixed. A fob that has lost its pairing, a receiver that has stopped listening or a button that has worn through are the interesting ones, and this section covers them.

Small things. Big difference.

Illustrative locksmith scene

1 / 3

The key went in stiffly, turned a quarter of the way, and came out in two pieces. Half of it is still inside the cylinder of the aluminium storefront door, and the deadbolt is hooked firmly into the frame.

Business Lockout Service

2 / 3

You have just signed the lease on a unit the previous tenant ran for a decade. The landlord handed over three keys, the back door wears a padlock nobody can open, and nobody can say how many front-door keys are still out there.

Commercial Rekeying

3 / 3

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

Which fix fits?

IfYou moved in and have no idea how many house keys exist.

ThenA patented cylinder in each exterior door, on one key.

Old keys stop working and new ones cannot be copied without you.

IfA neighbour's door was kicked in and yours has the same thin strike.

ThenA reinforced strike with long screws into the framing.

The bolt then ties into the studs, which is where kicked doors fail.

IfThe stockroom has the same cylinder as the staff washroom.

ThenA rated cylinder and a controlled key for that door.

One numbered key, issued against a signature, in a cylinder that resists picks and drills.

IfYou reached the parking lot after a long hike and the pocket that held your car key is empty.

ThenCar Lockout Service.

The visit follows a steady order.

IfThe car is yours now, but somebody else still holds a key to it.

ThenCar Key Replacement.

Older vehicles without an immobilizer are a pleasure to key, but whether a given car has one is checked rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer.

IfThe moving truck has left, half the boxes are inside, and the single key the previous owner handed over turns the knob but not the deadbolt.

ThenHome Lockout Service.

Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working.

What the census means at the door

30%

Newer homes. About 30% of homes in Newmarket were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.

60%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 60% of homes in Newmarket (2021 Census).

Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

Frequently asked questions

Advice · (289) 803-1633

How do you confirm I am allowed to have the business opened?

Through identification and a link to the premises. An owner shows photo identification with the lease, business registration or a document addressed to the company at that address. A manager or employee is confirmed by a call to the owner, head office or property manager on a number the locksmith can verify. If everything is inside, the check is finished after entry, before the locksmith leaves.

This is the third time this door has locked someone out. Is something wrong with the hardware?

It can be. A cylinder that is worn, a strike plate that has shifted, or a latch that no longer seats squarely will all produce repeat lockouts even though the key looks fine. The locksmith checks the alignment of the door and frame, tests how smoothly the latch throws, and looks at wear inside the cylinder before simply letting you back in. If the hardware is the cause, fixing that during the same visit is usually quicker than calling again next month.

Last night the door would not lock either. Is that the same problem?

Sometimes, though a deadlatch that will not catch at closing and a bolt that refuses to withdraw at opening are different mechanisms, not automatically the same fault. A door dropped on its pivots or a cam slipped behind the cylinder can affect either one; a closer stopping short of the strike explains a latch that will not catch but not a bolt that will not retract. The locksmith checks each symptom on its own during the visit and tests the door closing under its own weight before leaving.

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade.
